Blacksmithing is the process of heating iron and steel to near molten temperatures in order to forge and hammer them into new shapes. The hot metal can be drawn out, upset, twisted, bent, chiseled, and punched through to create an infinite variety of beautiful forms, both sculptural and utilitarian. Work is made using the anvil, hand tools, hammers, sledgehammers, or utilizing the power hammer or hydraulic press.
Welding uses electricity or powerful torches to bond two or more pieces of metal together, melting them and fusing them into a single continuous material. This studio also covers cutting, grinding, shaping, and finishing material, before and after welding. Welding and fabrication can be used to create beautiful abstract sculptural forms, or to assemble sturdy objects for everyday life.
Bronze casting is done by first creating a positive model out of wax, then surrounding that wax with plaster to make a mold. The wax is then melted out of that mold, and molten bronze is poured in to replace it. After cooling, the mold is broken, revealing the solid bronze left behind.
