Diverse Disciplines

Textile arts, collage and mixed media design are just some of the courses that define this area of our program devoted to special classes outside of our regular program scope.

 

Drawing

Basic studies in realistic drawing and portraiture are offered, as well more advanced classes in methods of abstraction. Artists working in a variety of styles share their skills in courses devoted to charcoal, pencil, pastels, and other media.

Painting

All the fundamental painting media are covered in courses offered with some of the leading figures of Northwest painting. Watercolor, oil, acrylic, and encaustic are offered, as well as courses focused on landscape, portraiture, and abstraction.


Printmaking

Pratt’s printmaking studio includes 3 intaglio presses, 2 lithograph presses, 2 letterpresses and 2 photo exposing units, more than 60 feet of glass-topped counter space, and a spacious work area with several large tables. The studio is completely equipped with an aquatint box, rollers, dry racks, flat files, a paper-soaking sink, a step shear and ventilation hood.

Courses covering basic techniques for intaglio, relief printing and monotype are always offered. Other classes have included: "Vitreography", "Printmaking Without the Press", "Artists Books", and "Paper Sculpture".

Hot Glass

Hot Shop: Pratt offers introductory, intermediate and advanced hot glass classes, which include glassblowing, solidworking and hot casting

Cold Shop: Workshops in coldworking are offered for those wishing to refine technique. Basic coldworking skills are covered in the foundation-level glassblowing classes.

 

Warm Glass Introductory level classes and workshops in fusing, lampworking and glass beadmaking are popular, and continuing students can pursue more advanced techniques with a variety of teachers.

 

Jewelry/Metalsmithing

In addition to introductory study in jewelry/metalsmithing techniques, students may choose from a broad range of upper level courses. Some recent offerings include: "Waxes and Casting", "Chasing and Repousse", "Silversmithing", "Rendering Techniques", "Cold Forging Non-Ferrous Metals", "Fabricating Hollow Forms", "Cloisonné Enameling", and "Bezel Setting."

Sculpture

Pratt’s sculpture studio offers space and equipment for welding/fabrication, forging, stonecarving, and foundry work. Welding equipment includes MIG, TIG, arc, oxy-acetylene set ups and a plasma cutter. The foundry program features a 300 lb. natural gas metal furnace and a small 50 pound furnace. A stone sculpture program is housed in an outdoor work area, and includes access to air-powered and hand tools. Pratt’s forging studio offers anvils, hand tools,
a large gas forge and an array of vises and jigs.
